Under a chilly sun, people on Thursday gathered in Strawberry Fields of Central Park, New York to honor music icon and peace activist John Lennon, 25 years after he was murdered by a deranged Beatles fan.

In a rare public appearance with fans, Yoko Ono, wife of late Lennon, laid a bouquet of white peonies on the "Imagine" mosaic in Central Park and blew kisses to the 200-strong crowd, just steps from the Dakota building where the 40-year-old Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman and where Ono still lives.

The pilgrimage to Strawberry Fields, the section of the park named after the Beatles song, began early in the morning and lasted all day long.

To many fans worldwide who observed this anniversary, Lennon was more than just one of the Beatles; his later music, particularly, was more than just songs. Some in Strawberry Fields today pointed to his 1971 recording "Imagine." One man said he had come to "mourn the loss of s

Lennon's legacy was also remembered at Thursday's Grammy Award nominations, which included a best album nod for McCartney, Lennon's songwriting partner with the Beatles.

"John Lennon influenced everybody in their music whether they know it or not," said singer Mariah Carey after she was nominated for eight Grammys.

In the northern English city of Liverpool where Lennon was born and raised, fans and officials created a shrine beneath a statue of the legendary Beatle and a priest read out a prayer in his memory at a small ceremony.

Lennon's songwriting partner, Paul McCartney, told the British Broadcasting Corp. that Lennon was "one of the great men of the 20th century ... I will always feel some kind of link with John."

"I thought 'My God, I have just seen the best thing that I could ever see', and since then it's been downhill because I've never seen anything as good as the Beatles." former friend and fellow musician Billy Kinsley, who knew Beatles Lennon and Paul McCartney in the 1960s, was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Lennon, who had turned 40 just two months earlier, was returning with Ono from a recording studio when he was gunned down at about 10:50 p.m. -- the time that a moment of silence was planned in Central Park.

A second moment of silence was planned for 11:15 p.m., the approximate time of Lennon's death. -- City officials planned to close the park at 1 a.m., as they have for several years over the objection of fans who want an all-night vigil.

If Lennon was alive, he would have turned 66 in October.
